Nutrition

When planning and preparing meals for our patients at Assuta Ashdod Hospital, our goal is to provide each and every patient with healthy, high-quality, rich food – tailored for their medical needs and personal tastes.

Michal Kreiter, Director of Assuta Ashdod Hospital’s Nutrition Unit, describes the thought behind the food: “Our goal is to provide each hospital patient with excellent, healthy food, tasting as much of home as possible. Each patient can choose their lunch from various main and side dishes – selecting an individual menu, at restaurant standards.”

The hospital’s menu is highly varied in order to meet the medical needs and nutritional preferences of our various patients. “From both a medical and a nutritional perspective, the hospital is equipped to provide individualized options for each patient. We offer more than 10 kinds of meals adapted for specific medical conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, celiac disease, lactose sensitivity, and more. We have food that’s low in sugar, low in potassium, gluten-free, high in protein, low in protein, with and without dairy products. We are also able to provide vegan or vegetarian meals. The food at Assuta Ashdod Hospital is kosher and we provide Glatt Kosher meals to patients who request them. The serving methods, too, are tailored to each patient. For example, patients can receive food with different textures,” explains Kreiter.

The food served at Assuta Ashdod Hospital is cooked on-site by an experienced team of chefs and kitchen staff. Given that we’re a new hospital, the kitchen is equipped with sophisticated appliances, excellent sanitary conditions, and of course it meets all the quality standards required.

What about the quality of our ingredients and our cooking? We emphasize them in terms of quality as well as health: “We use fresh, unprocessed ingredients. All food is low in salt and fat. It’s food that looks good, and tastes good,” says Kreiter.

The Role of Nutrition in Health

Nutrition also has a major role to play in the health of our patients and in their recovery. Therefore each department includes expert nutritionists to be of service to patients. “We encourage each patient to consult our nutritionists during their hospital stay and after their discharge. For patients who need individual counseling, appointments with nutritionists will be initiated,” Kreiter explains.

We know that food also has an important role to play in encouraging patients, and that some patients may prefer to eat food from home or elsewhere during their stay. Relatives of patients are welcome to bring food from home that is appropriate for the patients’ conditions. “It’s important to us to pamper our patients and make them feel good,” says Kreiter with a smile.

Hospital patients and their families are welcome to contact department staff and nutritionists with any question or request related to food, in order to make their hospital stay as pleasant, and as tasty, as possible.
