Meeting with a nurse

Meeting with a nurse

Your meeting with the nurse will include a nursing intake. This involves an examination of vital signs (such as heart rate, blood pressure, and temperature). The nurse will also note information about your medical history and the medications you take. In addition, you will receive instruction about the preparation for surgery, the treatment, the medical and nursing followup after surgery, as well as about treatment of pain, and about your discharge from hospital after the surgery.

Patients aged 70 or more will have a preliminary geriatric assessment. Where needed, based on the findings of the assessment, a geriatric nurse will be summoned for a more in-depth assessment, which will set the geriatric wheels in motion before and/or during hospitalization. This is to ensure that patients arrive in optimal condition for surgery.

Meals during hospitalization – if you require a special menu during your stay, such as low sugar, low salt, low lactose, vegetarian, gluten free, vegan, etc., or if you require Glatt Kosher food, please inform the nurse at this stage.

Meeting with an anesthesiologist

Meeting with an anesthesiologist
During your visit at the Preoperative Clinic, you will meet with an anesthesiologist. He or she will explain the preparation for surgery, the existing methods of anesthesia (general/ regional/ local) and the type of anesthesia that is appropriate for you. The doctor will perform a medical assessment, review the lab tests, EKG and X-rays. It is therefore important to bring all relevant medical documentation and test results. If needed, additional blood tests will be performed and samples will be taken to detect infection. If you take anti-coagulants (such as Coumadin, Aspirin, Clexane, etc.) you must inform the anesthesiologist and the nurse so that they can instruct you accordingly. It should be emphasized that you must not stop taking these medications on your own. The physician will answer your questions and explain about the process of anesthesia and surgery, the expected pain after the operation, and postoperative pain treatment methods. Your meeting with the staff of the Preoperative Clinic is an excellent opportunity to raise questions about the process of surgery and subsequent recovery. Our staff are at your service and will answer all of your questions.
